第一节:阅读下列短文,从每题所给的四个选项(A、B、C和D)中,选出最佳选项,并在答题纸上将该选项标号涂黑。

A

Several times on my way to work, I passed a gentleman who I supposed homeless. He had a lot of his possessions (私人商品) tied down to his bike and held a cardboard sign that said he was a vet who doesn’t drink or do drugs, but would appreciate anything that could be given. He usually has headphones on and is listening to the radio. He is always minding his own business, often reading as well. I’ve never seen him actively “ panhandling”.

Several times, while I was passing him, I realized I had some food with me, so I turned around and offered him that food. He took off his headphones, and said, “ Umm, blueberry muffins are my favourite!” with a big smile and a gleam in his eyes. He thanked me so warmly.

The graciousness(有礼貌) and humbleness(谦逊) of his receiving makes me want to continue to stop by with “surprises” of food, money or other gifts. In the past, I’ve met homeless folks who turned down the food I was offering, saying that they wanted only money instead.

So this wonderful gentleman being so open to receiving has been a blessing.

It also makes me think how open I am to receiving in my life --- am I humble and grateful when I am gifted with something? Sometimes yes, sometimes no, but rarely as gracious, humble and sincere as this wonderful man has been in receiving.

41. What did the author think of the gentleman as at first?

A. a businessman B. a gentleman C. a musician D. a beggar

42. The underlined word “panhandling” in the first paragraph might have the same meaning as “ ____________.”

A. begging B. stealing C. cooking D. working

43. What is the man mainly doing on the street every day?

A. Singing songs happily while listening to music

B. Waiting to receive offer to be given

C. Running his own successful belongings.

D. Showing off what he has got from others.

44. What is special about the man that the author describes?

A. He receives offers without feeling ashamed

B. He refuses to be given drinks or drugs

C. He likes blueberry muffins very much.

D. He tries his best to help others in need.
