Step I Revision
T: Have you finished the short passage I gave you yesterday? Would you like to share it with the whole class?
Ask several students to read to the whole class.
Step II Lead-in
Make up conversations with your calendar.
T: What’s the date?
Ss: It’s January 1st.
T: It’s New Year’s Day. (Let Ss guess the Chinese meaning. Then another date.) What’s the date?
Ss: It’s June 1st.
T: It’s Children’s Day…
The same way with other festivals “Spring Festival, International Workers’ Day, Teachers’ Day, National Day, Women’s Day, Christmas”. Show them on the screen and have Ss read them a few times.
Show pictures of each festival. Let Ss practise them according to them.
T: What can you see in the picture?
Ss: It’s Teachers’ Day.
T: What’s the date?
Ss: It’s September 10th.
T: …
Then show the following on the screen:
New Year’s Day — January 1st
Children’s Day — June 1st
Spring Festival — January or February
International Workers’ Day — May 1st
Teachers’ Day—September 10th
National Day—October 1st
Women’s Day—March 8th
Christmas Day—December 25th
April Fools’ Day—April 1st
Ask Ss to practise like this:
New Year’s Day is January 1st.
The Spring Festival is in January or February.
Women’s Day is March 8th.
Step III Game
What’s missing?
Put up the cards for each festival at the front of the classroom. Tell Ss to look at the cards for one minute and then close their eyes. Remove a picture.
Ask Ss to open their eyes and try to figure out which card you have removed. Call on individual Ss to answer with the name of the card until one answers correctly.
Step IV Sentence dragon
T: We will play a game named sentence dragon. First I will give every one of you three cards. On each card, write one of the following:
1. Who
2. Verb phrases of help, have, want, go to school and fly a kite (write only one of them)
3. Where
Then collect the cards into three groups. Let each student choose one card from each group to put them up on the Bb. He or she answers other Ss’ Qs with the words he or she has chosen.
For example, a student gets the following:
I, read books, Children’s Day
Other Ss will ask: What do you want to do on Children’s Day?
The student’s sentence will be: I read books on Children’s Day.
If a student gets the following:
Kim, fly a kite, International Workers’ Day.
Other Ss will ask: What does Kim want to do on International Workers’ Day?
The student’s sentence will be: Kim wants to fly a kite on International Workers’ Day.
Step V Listening & discussing
Let Ss do some listening practice with the target language.
T: Now you will hear a short dialogue among Ms. Liu, Li Ming and Danny. Please listen carefully and then answer my Qs:
1. What day is it?
2. When is the Spring Festival?
3. What does Danny want to do during the Spring Festival? (Explain it to the class.)
4. What’s Danny’s favorite food?
Ss can listen to the dialogue twice. They can write the key words according to the Qs while listening.
Play the audiotape. After listening, check Ss’ answers.
Suggested answers:
1. It’s Thursday, October 29th.
2. January 29th is the Spring Festival.
3. He wants to go the restaurant and eat French fries, hamburgers, donuts…
4. Donuts are his favorite food.
Then discuss in groups:
What is Western food?
What is Chinese food?
Step VI Homework
Finish the exercise. (Ex. II. A, on Page 69)
